HM King Mohammed VI, accompanied by Prince Moulay Rachid, inaugurated, on Thursday, the national laboratory for the cultivation of date palm tissue, built within Errachidia’s Regional Centre for Agricultural Research at a total cost of nearly 31 million dirhams.- 45,000 date palm stumps produced annually by 2014.
- The project is meant to ensure sustainable improvement of productivity and competitiveness of the date palm.
The Sovereign toured the new laboratory, which is part of the national program for the planting of nearly 1.3 million plants by 2015 and 2.9 million by 2020.
The facility is meant to improve sustainable productivity and competitiveness of the date palm. It aims at adapting in vitro propagation techniques to different varieties and clones of high commercial value, producing basic budding stumps required by the private sector for the mass propagation of date palm, and providing technical assistance to commercial laboratories in the field of micro-propagation of date palm.
The laboratory was built by the National Institute of Agronomic Research (INRA) within 14 months.
On this occasion, the Director General of the INRA, Mohamed El Badraoui, presented to the Sovereign a book that highlights the different varieties of dates in Morocco.
